Cream or Sugar?

High tea is synonymous with decadence, the simple tea and biscuits of the standard morning tea refreshment replaced with bite size cream delights and elaborate multi-layered sandwiches. A chance to indulge in pure sophistication.
YUM! tucking into the sumptuous mini cakes!
I have never experienced High Tea before so I put my best 1950’s attire on and magically transported to another time to indulge in the quintessential English ritual of high tea.
Watermark also had Gluten Free on offer
There’s a lot of attention on the traditions of England at the moment. With the Royal Wedding many Australians are embracing our connection to the Monarchy and to our English heritage, celebrating this most revered institution. Generally, we reserve the traditions of high tea for special occasions, but we are now happy to celebrate the art of high tea in classic style which embodies all the romance of a bygone era- PLUS it’s fun!!
Upon arriving at the gorgeous Watermarks high tea, we were immediately greeted with a smile by the friendly staff. We were seated over-looking the restaurants amazing ocean views of the strand- absolutely perfect weather! All the tables were nicely laid with crisp white tablecloths; the atmosphere was nice, relaxing and with beautiful fresh flowers.

The origin of High Tea has humble beginnings- not from noble elegant heights as you might think. Unlike the traditional ‘tea time’, a light refreshment in the middle of the afternoon, high tea grew out of the desire of labourers and other members of the working class to have a more substantial meal in the evening. Usually consisting of more hearty dishes than the lunch meal, high tea as it was known in the 17th century shares more with the nightly household dinner than it does with afternoon tea, or with anything lofty or exclusive
Grabbing some flyers to put in the shop
With a lovely choice of teas we had a selection of tasty morsels including mini scones with lashing of jam and cream, the Watermarks famous Macaroons and traditional cucumber salmon sandwiches created with a modern twist. I had a fabulous time being a lady, enjoying good company, delectable gourmet food and fantastic scenery. I can’t wait for the Watermarks next high tea in August!
