Snapped out and about- The Consortium. This is high-octane glamour, vamped up with sexy gladiator embellishments and tribal jewellery. The key to looking really red hot, simple bohemian braided hair and nipped-in waist for that va-voom effect. This outfit brings all the drama, so it's great she’s armed it with a neutral animal kingdom clutch. Can’t leave out the cute Tootie heels (the toe bootie) on trend and LOVE IT!

Theatre Threads
Boy From OZ was performing at Townsville’s Civic Theatre, enjoying all the well dressed fashionistas on and off the stage was Petticoat Lane. Spotted out was the Bulletins own Roanne Johnson dressed to impress in a French Connection bodycon dress, Guess heels and one very special Dior bag! One thing I’ve started to notice in Townsville, everyone is making an effort when they step out the door. This simple but structured black dress has bold theatrical over tones to the sleeves which suit’s the event she’s attending perfectly. The bag...well it speaks for its self -who doesn’t love DIOR!!! Chic, clean and extremely impressive!

Millinery Magic
Getting out of the shop and visiting locals is a rare pleasure and an opportunity never turned down. Boy, we have some talented girls in this town and one of these very clever young ladies is Jaclyn McDonald from Show Poni Millinery. Jaclyn is one those special Townsville gems quietly working away making race outfit dreams come true. Jaclyn invited me along to her fabulous shoot to see the magic behind the scenes.
Getting to know Jaclyn:
Growing up along the south coast of NSW on acreage near Milton, Jaclyn was bred from racing royalty, her father an avid thoroughbred breeder and racer, set Jaclyn on her creative path in designing hats and fascinators for the racing season. The racing circuit was her introduction but Jaclyn also owned horses, decorating and styling them before gymkhanas “beautifying” as Jaclyn describes it. Horses with sewn rosettes, braided tail and forelock, even applying horse make up (yes I am not kidding) painting hooves with black paint for nail polish and hand making gorgeous origami ribbon and pinwheel brow bands complete with diamantes.
Jaclyn was 16 years old and keenly attending race events where she found amazing inspiration in fashions of the field. Jaclyn says “I often looked at my fascinators which I borrowed from my mum and think, I can make something so much better than this” Millinery was a natural progression for Jaclyn and through a lot of research, her love of fashion, creativity and seeing a gap in the market for affordable original headwear, encouraged her to create Show Poni.
Self taught but eager to gain more experience Jaclyn attended several Millinery workshops, conventions and training courses with prestigious and well known Milliners from all over the world. “My favourite Milliner is Richard Nylon from Melbourne who is also self taught”. Now an established Milliner her self, Jaclyn has an online Millinery store based in Townsville and specialises in custom designing one-off hats & fascinators for the races (Fashions on the Field) and bridal.
Jaclyn has created individual wow-factor hats and has been continually winning Millinery Awards at race days around the country and featuring in numerous fashion parades with local designers and boutiques. (One of which, we are proud to say, was Petticoat Lane!)

Jaclyn McDonald "I believe that passion and determination is everything. The desire to assist ladies release their inner Show Poni, making them feel great and comfortable is my number one aim. Having every other lady at the races turning their head to look at you and whisper to her friend........I wonder where she got THAT HAT??"

Layering
Channelling the inner bohemian was this lovely PL customer. This look is all about layered peasant dressing. While we’re always going to love the layer-friendly basics, it’s actually the statement pieces that really catch the eye this season. Undone chic meets 70’s folk detailing. Chunky embellishments like bracelets, pilling on rings, mixing and mashing jewellery is fun, fitting Townsville’s style perfectly.

Retro Baby!
Isn’t vintage a hot ticket item at the moment, the runways and magazines are a blaze with vintage inspiration. The decade of choice.....the acid drenched era of the 70’s. Two dresses that have made their way into Petticoat Lanes heart are these two extreme examples of exotic retro print! When it comes to patterns the quirkier the better!
The first is a two piece 70’s Australian classic! Gypsy style high waisted skirt and halter neck top, boho chic is SO fun and wild- I love this one!
Specially flown in from Nashville Tennessee is this one of kind disco trip blouse dress (Size 12/14 which is very hard to find!) The label Modern Couture is a true psychedelic piece, just look at those colours! simply breathtaking! If you’re looking for a unique race dress for the Townsville Cup, this show stopper will have you standing out from any crowd. Remember, when loved, vintage can be a wonderful heirloom addition to your wardrobe, retaining and possibly increasing in value over the years.
these two fabulous items arrived today, our main shipment is due end of next week! Very exciting!! http://www.petticoatlane.com.au/ please feel free to comment on the 'comment link' below:)

The Vest We Trust
Townsville ‘s lucky when comes to cold weather, the temperature in far North Queensland rarely goes below 9 degrees at night and the days are simply fresh and clear. So what could we wear? Vests, over sized or tailored they can be draped and styled as a dress or loose over pants. The textures are effortlessly easy to mix and perfectly slot into fashion’s 70s mood. They are the perfect combination of masculine and feminine, it’s all about dressed up grunge this winter with button up vests and army coats.
Look at these! I love these ballerina slip-on’s...they make a great statement with a gladiator twist

Meeting Georgia
Georgia Conroy is a bit of a celeb around Townsville, I remember all the Townsville Cups and Amateurs seeing her in the most amazing outfits, they're always so innovative and striking, lifting the standard that little bit higher every year. So I was a little intimidated when Georgia breezed into Petticoat Lane with her gorgeous daughter Cate for a spot of shopping. Georgia’s easy going warm personality is infectious and it wasn’t long before we were in deep conversation about fashion and the joys of owning your own business.
Times are a changing and business is no longer a man’s domain. What I love is the diversity of female entrepreneurship in Townsville, so I jumped at the chance to chat about this gorgeous and inspiring role model. Georgia Conroy is chief instructor to Rhonda’s Final Touch Modelling (RFT). She juggles networking with some of the hottest North Queensland talent with co-running her business a long side Rhonda Barnes of Rhonda’s Fitness For Ladies. Georgia styles ladies to their fullest potential in her finishing school, orchestrates promotional events through her modelling agency and works the fashion circuit in North Queensland’s massive racing season. Her path has been a colourful one and one that demands much of her time and energy incorporating judging, modelling and organizing a successful business with being an energetic mother of four children. This sure sounds exhausting but Georgia seems so focused and serene when chatting about it all.
Born in Ingham, Georgia moved to Townsville at age 12 where she attended Pimlico High School then began her career with professional modelling school June Dally Models. It was there Georgia developed her enthusiasm for styling, being able to transform people’s appearances, their image and was the foundation needed to launch her own business idea.
When asked why she chose this career, Georgia says “I love what I do because, I loved doing it myself and now get the opportunity to pass onto those that aspire to work within the modelling agency the chance to do it professionally, along with aiding so many young ladies in boosting their self esteem and focusing on positive body image through our personal development and grooming courses”
The industry is constantly changing and Georgia’s role involves a lot of negotiating. I asked her how she manages to stay so passionate and driven about her business.
“It gives me much pleasure, along with seeing and hearing the excitement of a model when she’s booked for her first paid modelling assignment. I see that RFT can only build on it’s great reputation as being Townsville’s leading modelling agency and finishing school and hope that as the city grows we do too; businesses that have never used our services before take that step and use professional, reliable and eager models for their advertising campaigns.”
In addition to finishing school, Georgia styles models for fashion parades, photo shoots, promotional events and of course she has her all important judging duties. During this time Georgia has had the opportunity to rub shoulders with celebrities like Antonia Kidman, Natalie Grewsluski, Brett Tucker from McLeods daughters and Sonia Kruger. With a long list of celebrities such as these I asked who she admires most?
“I admire those that are able to help others and make others feel good without wanting anything in return. Those that can juggle very busy life styles and still be able to stay true to themselves and their families. And more importantly, my Nonna's (they're no longer here) and mum who have been a huge influence on my life. Also a dear friend of mine who trained me as a model and guided me within the modeling industry, Nicole Hagen who was and still is a big part of my life.”
RFT already has a fabulous list of accomplishments, one of which is Townsville girl Kasey-Lee Brunker who was a finialist in the 2010 Miss Bikini International. So I was quick to ask Georgia what her best styling tip would be.
“Keep it simple, don't over-do it by hiding flaws or you will bring more attention to 'your' flaws and you can look absolutely fabulous on a budget! You do not need to shop at the most expensive boutiques in town to look great! It's top to toe grooming, how you styled your hair, makeup and the effort you go to in looking good. I am happy to say I shop on a budget and have frequented many op shops or looked out for bargains because it's how you put it all together that counts!”
Townsville’s face of business is changing. The traditional stereotype of the gray-haired middle aged male entrepreneur no longer dominates the business arena, as more and more women are recognising their capabilities and setting up their own companies independently. I hear many women say they lack the confidence to make that leap from the corporate world. Well, I can safely say after meeting Georgia anything is possible and it’s not dependent on age, race or dress size, but the ability to lead, inspire, achieve and excel in your chosen field. In business you’ve got to have a lot of passion, determination and continuously reinvent yourself- I think RFT Modelling is a great way to start this journey:)
Georgia’s favourite quote “'We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do” Mother Teresa. “I smile all the time and smile at those I know and more importantly those I don't know! You just never know what that smile will do to whoever you're smiling at, so it's a fitting quote!”

The Oscar Goes To...
This was a stella year for high fashion- who wouldn’t want to be at the 2011 Academy Awards to see the magnificent sweep of stunning dresses. So, for us mere mortals Petticoat Lane has picked out a few fav’s and maybe one or two we’re not too sure about.
Amy Adams chose L’Wren Scott, a midnight-blue sequin cap-sleeved dress that set off one of the most beautiful necklaces of the night. A real show stopper and a perfect colour for her complexion.
Young Hailee Steinfeld in a nude Marchesa- dressed accordingly to her age and is a “best-dressed” in Petticoat Lanes eyes without competition. The fourteen-year-old graduated her look with a debutante-length dress and diamond-and-platinum Fred Leighton headband were youthful, elegant, and age-correct.

Halle Berry was the absolute stand out for the night, in a Marchesa tulle and nude illlusion, Halle created a moment of red-carpet splendour I haven’t seen in years. Shes the WINNER and PL’s Academy Awards night pic!
Honourable mentions: Mila Kunis in pale lavender Elie Saab- lovely structure to it- simple elegance. Hilary Swank in a swirl of Gucci ostrich feathers....gorgeous
The risk takers: Cate Blanchett went for Givenchy Haute Couture pleats in the palest lilac—this could've gone wrong on any other person. This risk paid off....class and cool.
Scarlett Johansson’s dress didn’t get good reviews at all but I thought it was edgy with wine lace Dolce & Gabbana. This dress has a cut out back- definitely a more casual look but I still think it works and she pulls it off regardless of what the critics say.
OH Dear? Worst: Helena Bonham Carter chose a Colleen Atwood velvet Edwardian bustle dress with her ever-present sunglasses. Carter is known for this and once again worst dressed list (at least she's consistent). It has vintage inspiration but I would like to see her in something more contemporary. PL-EASE Helena we love you but just once wear something half decent we are begging you!
